Description
To get to the U.S. Embassy I walked along the Malecón (Spanish for Pier). Prior to the turn of the 20th century high waves generated by Los Nortes (Northern Winds) regularly ravished the coast of Havana. Construction of the Malecon (officially Avenida de Maceo) began in 1901 during the U.S. occupation of Cuba and was completed in 1952. The main purpose of building the Malecon was to protect Havana from the water. Having built the sea wall the Cubans added, over time, an esplanade and highway. It wound up serving as a meeting place for Habaneros, for lovers and for individual fishermen. It runs five miles (eight kilometers) from just west of the Melia Cohiba Hotel east to the mouth of Havana Harbor in Old Havana.

I like the composition - when the 8 ks jogging track fades into Nirvana... and it's so nice to see some colour on the building on the right hand border, otherwise they look just like a concrete jungle with hardly any green trees ? such a pity... we must be so spoiled here, living in the sub-tropics.

It's always great to see Brigitte here...and to be able to read her comments once more......Well, this is an example of what I clumsily refer to as your tall or long shots, where, as we move down, we find a whole new shot on the bottom. I'm gonna sound repetitious, but I can only be honest: This scrolls into a spectacular shot. The long deep sweep of this walkway with all that grunge and decay, contrasted with the smooth road, contrasted with the cleaner brighter buildings, is just terrific. High visual drama in that contrast. And that sky couldn't be more silken if you tried. Real contrast between its deep blues and the lighter hues of the bldgs. There are several complete 'worlds' in this shot, all ending in that huge open-jaw of a walkway. I hope people zoomed and scrolled, because this shot literally opens up to us; and with real clarity of detail too. Even without the bottom, it would be a beautiful shot, for the sky and buildings---but with that lower half? Another whole world. Great work. (And the narrative is just right too.)
