I found this link for my mysterious garden fungus and I used a 105 Sigma macro lens to get better detail. I found it to still be difficult to focus on the fungus. see next post

I'd heard of this fungus, but never seen it. Yes, we can see that it's one tough photographic subject, and I don't know why. Maybe its density, as you suggest; maybe too much white light. But your capture here makes it look like a gigantic crystalline thing, advancing on that branch. And that little string at bottom is such a nice addition to the shot. This is almost surreal. I love the shot; and maybe there are just things in nature that won't be photographed, but the image is striking regardless.

This is a wonderful macro photo, Richard! This fungus is so delicate and beautiful. It reminds me a lot of the frost crystals that form on your window on a really cold day.
