Hi, I'm Andrea, and I'm interested in creatures and plants both wild and tamed, and people of all sorts. I only use a compact digital camera ,as I love being able to get it into a back pocket, and not have to cart heavy kit about. I carry a Panasonic Lumix TZ series, binoculars and a hand lens almost everywhere. Most of my outings are with the dogs so I only use point and shoot.
I am getting the hang of Photoshop, thanks to some very kind folk on RR!
I have a wildlife garden in Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, and spend a lot of time there . I retired from teaching art to teenagers a while ago.
I'm now getting some good results with my digi compacts; it took me a while to make the switch from my old film camera, an 1960 ish Pentax Spotmatic, but the mistakes are much cheaper!
I have 4 lodgers, 3 dogs and a parrot who, as at 2017, I have had 40 years.
I has so far had 19 dogs, mostly rescues.

Fantastic painting, Andrea! Excellent work! :)

An outstanding work but rather stark. You wouldn't be related to Edvard Munch by any chance?

lol, Mark. Yeah, there's a bit of Munch in your portrait, but this is an Andrea painting all the way. I like that you're so honest in your portraits, you show humans as they are rather than as one might 'want' them to be. (Rembrandt did some portraits of himself grinning like an idiot, just to get the spectrum of human emotion in his work. You probably know the painting I'm thinking of.) This has such penetrating eyes---as if someone just told you the mysteries of life. You use color very expressively, deep blue-purples around the eyes, reds and pinks in the cheeks and around the ears, very expressive lips...a penetrating self-portrait, Andrea, I admire you for being so honest with yourself, that takes conviction. And your neck has three sections, also very expressive. Your background is sketched in in spots, and painted more in others, showing that your main focus was your face; though the dark hues in the background definitely communicate seriousness and even a pondering mood. God, I see this and I want to start painting people again! This is remarkably penetrating and honest. An outstandingly expressive work. (And btw, when speaking of photographing art through glass: Imagine what art book photographers go through when they have to shoot lots of paintings in museums. It's a tough task, and I wouldn't have known there was glass in this image if you hadn't told me.)

You have painted this so beautifully Andrea with superb detail, though I would have liked to see a smile. You have used such great colors.

You've mellowed with age, I think; what a starkly truthful sort of self-portrait! And I love the background, with the garden exerting its presence. Well done, as always; is there anything you can't do?

Your use of color is always amazing to me! You do it so well, and it seems so natural. I'm in awe! This is a terrific portrait. I would know it for you (and your style) a mile away in the dark. Wonderful!
