Description

I have one of those cash back credit cards so last week I received a year-end present of $200 from my credit card company. Hooray! Then three days ago I picked up some malware which shut down my Internet access. I called my provider who directed me to a certified Microsoft telephone number. I spent several hours with Ishant Kumar from New Delhi, India working to clean my computer. The charge? $199.95. On the plus side I had a very pleasant conversation with Ishant about India, religion and relations with Pakistan. And I still have the nickel. My stepmother collects refrigerator magnets. Where ever her children or friends go they are tasked with bringing back a magnet for her refrigerator door. And so it came to pass that, finding myself in Havana, Cuba I set out to find a refrigerator magnet for my stepmom. For two days I looked. I asked our guide Jorge. I asked the hotel staff. I asked Cubans I met on the street. I was met with blank stares. No one knew what I was talking about. One day we were taken to the main artist's market located in an old warehouse down by the harbor. Imagine an enormous building containing hundreds of booths. Each booth displaying paintings or wood carvings, ceramics and clothing for sale. We were given forty-five minutes. I wandered the aisles, searching. Then, almost out of time, I passed one booth and there they were. The fellow offered discounts for volume purchases and proudly announced, "All of our magnets are made here in Cuba because we don't have the money to import them from China." I crossed the street to explore a small church there. With just enough time to catch the bus I was met by the vendor. I had forgotten two of the magnets and he had spent ten minutes looking for me.

You are a superb writer, Mark. I await your novel.

Love these objects, they have a zest and freshness absent from much commercial stuff.

ok, before I comment on this terrific upload: "Violators will be toad"???? Duuuuuude! You blew me out of the water. (I had an actual "alternate" text for your dedi, which was all puns. But as there was a word limit, I couldn't post it. Then I accidentally trashed it. It's no great loss that it disappeared, mind you, but I was aware of who I was dealing with: I just wanted you to know that...)

This is terrific! And Andrea has it all: You are a wonderful writer, and you pick such great specifics. As I was reading this, I thought, "I bet he'll have another wonderful turn of events, or someone will step into his narrative, or he'll end with a surprise..." And you didn't disappoint. And, with Andrea, these magnets have real zest and freshness. And when you find them the way you did, they bear a specialness for that alone. It's kind of like, you see this object you're so-so about, but when you hear how the creator made it and what love they put into it, it becomes dear. I love these magnets. Lucky stepmother. Nicely displayed too (ie, in your jpg). And you ended your talk with the Microsoft guy with another Mark journey? Terrific. Love your narrative, and I'd put these on my fridge any day. (Amazing that the seller sought you out!) See---that's what I was talking about. What you do with simple fridge magnets...

interesting collection of magnets - definitely poles apart from what you find in the U.S. cool narrative. Glad to see you got your computer situation taken care of
