Description
"He fell, he's gone...I can't see him." Says Crete, his voice low and filled with dread.
Not sure how best to help Tate, Crete rushes back towards his brothers and Hayden, reflecting on recently transpired events. It all started when he and his brothers were awoken from some kind of magical sleep. Tate along with another man calling himself the Broken Arrow claimed we had been asleep for more than a millennium. "What an ass." Whispers Crete to himself. I know how ridiculous that sounds, but when we awoke we had little to no memory. To be honest, it frustrates the hell out of me. How did I get in that mountain? Why do I have gray skin? Why do my eyes glow red? I have all these questions, the most important of which is who was I?
The tomb vault which also served as our sleep chamber was enormous, more coins and precious stones than I would have believed possible. Their were objects and artifacts from countless centuries, items I couldn't even begin to identify. One area called to me in particular, I can't really explain how or why, I just new that the area was mine. First I noticed my armor, then I moved on to the weapons. I had one blade in particular that the Broken Arrow forbid. A sword he called the mortal slayer, the blade was enchanted to specifically kill mortal beings. I reasoned the blade was rightfully mine, it was in my tomb after all. When I refused to hand it over, things began to escalate quickly and just when we were about to come to blows Tate stepped in. The Broken Arrow backed down reluctantly to Tate's reasoning preventing blood shed. I ended up leaving with the blade along with two additional ones, a pair of hammers and a massive two bladed battle axe. At some point before we had exited the mountain, the Broken Arrow had disappeared without anyone noticing. Personally I won't miss the prick!
The floating path system on which the mountain tomb resided ended up being an endless maze of possibilities, literally branching off in hundreds of directions. We followed the red head back the way she had come, that's how we ended up here in these ruins, It's where she claims to have almost been killed by a dragon. It didn't take us long to realize that we weren't alone here. I thought it would be best to confront the creature before it found us so Tate and I headed out into the darkness, unfortunately the creature did find us first and attacked. It was a small dragon, or at least that's what I thought, but Tate insisted that it was a wyvern, something about only having two legs. It breathed fire down upon us and for a fraction of a second I feared the worse, but to my surprise my armor protected me flawlessly deflecting the flame. I then moved in for the attack, testing my hammers. With each blow the giant beast roared in pain, that's when Tate decided to slip behind it. Next thing I knew Tate was slammed from the creatures tail hurtling him across the way, he collided with a large stone and I heard something snap. As his body fell lifelessly to the ground I knew it was bad, but when the ground itself opened beneath him swallowing him whole I panicked.
With no time to waste I pulled the claw hilt sword from my back. The Broken Arrow said this sword was enchanted for dragons, I know a wyvern isn't a dragon, but I was hoping they were similar enough. With several quick thrusts into the creature it became evident that wyverns are indeed some form of dragon, because as I relentlessly stabbed the giant beast it fell shocked and convulsing violently. Not wasting any time I moved to its head and slid the blade smoothly into one of its giant red eyes, the creature died instantly.
With the wyvern now dead, I rushed to the hole Tate had fallen into, but I couldn't see anything, there was only black. "TATE!" I shouted into the hole hoping for a reply, but no reply came, there was only silence. The way the hole seemed to absorb sound had me worried, if it's as deep as I'm thinking Tate could be hurt badly or even worse he could be...NO, I can't think that way.
I cant see worth a damn so I decide Tate's best chance at survival was for me to leave him and go back for the others. Hades with his ability to manipulate fire can at least provide some light, but I fear until the sun rises we will be unlikely to descend into hole after him.
I move at unsafe speed through the darkness stumbling over rock and debris. I need to slow down, If I'm not careful I could fall into a hole myself. I begin to wonder if I'm even heading in the right direction when slightly to my left I see the sky faintly illuminated from what could only be a small campfire. I alter my course hoping I'm not to late, every moment is critical right now.
I burst into the small camp area startling the lot of them. "Tate's hurt!" I say with limited breath. Between fighting the wyvern and rushing back here my body is feeling it, I'm winded.
I find Hades next to me almost faster than my senses can register. "Where is he brother? Which way?" He asks.
I begin to answer, but am interrupted by Hayden. "Hurt? He's hurt and you left him?" She asks in disbelief.
"He was knocked down a hole." I yell at her. "It's deep, he didn't reply when I called out to him. I can't see out there, I didn't know what else to do!"
Hayden takes a step back fearful of Crete's tone.
"Now is not the time." Says Hades while drawing the sword hilts from his back. Blades of fire then appear, it's a spectacular sight and even better the swords give off a remarkable amount of light.
"This way!" Urges Hades, gesturing the others to follow him.
Crete looks puzzled. "You don't know where your going." He says questioningly.
"Trust me brother, if I didn't think I could find him I wouldn't be taking point." Replies Hades.
Grys, Hayden and her two blue minions follow Hades into the darkness while Crete takes up the rear just in case there is any more trouble. He watches Hades zig and zag with such assurity, making Crete wonder what other secrets his brother is with holding? It also leaves him wondering why Hades seems to have multiple gifts and why Crete has yet to discover any for himself. They are brothers after all, it only stands to reason if Hades has special abilities than Crete should as well.
"It's just up ahead, not much further now." Says Hades not bothering to turn around to face us.
He found the spot unbelievably fast, just as he said he would, but how? Wonders Crete.
We all gather around the hole. With Hades light illuminating the surrounding area Crete realizes that the hole was bigger than he would have guessed.
"The wyverns tail hit Tate over there." Points Crete.
"Wyvern?" Asks Grys.
"Yeah." Replies Crete grin. "Only had two legs."
"That's not right." Interrupts Hayden. "What attacked me was definitely a dragon, that means that it could still be around here, we could still be in danger." She says with a slight quiver in her voice.
Grys places a hand on her shoulder. "Are you sure you saw a dragon? A wyvern with its size and mouth full of teeth must look very similar to a dragon when your running for your life." He asks calmly, not wanting to rile her more than she already is.
"NO!" She says sternly. "I know the difference between a wyvern and a dragon, there nothing alike. It's like comparing the differences between a knife and a long sword."
Grys grins through his mask. "Okay."
"How do we get Tate out?" Asks Hayden full of frustration and impatience.
But before anyone can answer, the group watches as Hades drops a large rock into the hole. For a moment everyone and everything is silent.
"Nothing." Says Hades. "It's deep alright, I never heard it hit the bottom."
"But if Tate fell that far..." Hayden stops mid sentence letting her words linger lifelessly in the air between the group.
