Fascinating textures. Cut off the sky & it would become an unrecognizable, pure abstract...

I'm guessing lava - but I'm no expert.

Looks like tailings from a mining operation considering the salt deposits also. Great photo!

I'm going say its igneous basalt, which is pretty common in the west.

Looks like a landscape from another planet. Awesome shot, Richard!
How far away were you from this? I can just imagine flying my Inspire up to the top of that bluff and doing a bit of exploring..

Amazing mound and awesome formations.
Just had to scan your gallery to see what work and photos I had been missing.
Your uploads are always a treat to view, although I don't have the time to catch up.

zoom is a must---it's such an amazing capture; as Rod says, it looks like it's from another planet. The light on all those beige spots---I can't tell if those are rocks, dirt, or actual growths (they look like mushrooms! I'm sure they're just rock and soil)---the light on them makes this look like a radioactive site. And the veins of black are equally arresting. I don't know which it is (lava or coal), but it's an amazing shot. And, as in your sky shots, you make shots like these sing---ie, almost all one span, all one 'thing', and it's still stunning. Many photographers would create a dull shot from this: It has to do with your detail, contrast, proportions, etc. A beautiful shot of a very strange, even ugly sight. Quite striking.
