Description

A detail of one of the items on display at Melk Abbey. It dates from the 17th century. Any guesses as to what it is? No fair googling to get the answer, which I will reveal tomorrow... Please zoom.

I saw something similar to this in France. It was an intricate lock system inside a chest. I will post my photo of that after you answer your mystery so you can see why I think that is what this is also.
