Well, it turned out to be not much of a mystery, as Katherine (SunriseGirl) got it right as the first commenter yesterday. What I posted yesterday was the intricate locking mechanism on the inside of a treasure chest lid. I would have loved to see this lock in action - would have been great if they had made an interactive exhibit out of it...
