Description
The man, who told her to call him Joe, no last name, just Joe, had an ancient looking map. The original markings on which were in some language she did not recognize. There were a few more recent looking marks in pen, but of those the only thing she recognized were what were obviously longitude and latitude. Using this map Joe guided them to a small, unnamed lake, high in the mountains south of Puma Yumco. The Beechcraft’s altimeter showed over sixteen-thousand feet as they touched down on the water.
Joe had her beach the airplane on the south shore of the lake. From there it was a short walk to the entrance of a cave.
“What are we doing here, Joe?”
“We’re looking for something Hitler would love to get his hands on. Something known, as best our experts could translate, to ‘The Path’, or ‘The Way’, or, possibly ‘The Portal.’ The legends indicate it is a path that leads to wealth and success.”
“What, like a pile of gold?”
“Not exactly. At least I don’t think so. I think it is a path through time and space. But no one really knows for sure.”
They entered the dark cave and lit some torches Joe had brought with him. The corridor into the heart of the mountain was rough and narrow at first, but then it seemed to open up. The light from their torches no longer illuminated walls very near to them. The just shone off into endless darkness. They followed was seemed to be a fairly obvious path along the ground until, out of the darkness, their torches began to show the shape of what had to be the point of their journey.
