Description

Let's talk about Fenrir the dread wolf and his father Loki. I generally avoid my family for obvious reasons :-), but current events bring these two to mind. Now, there are a lot of ways of interpreting 'myths' like Ragnarrok, Gotterdamerung, Apocalypse, etc. In the story, Fenrir slays Odin and Jormungandr slays Thor. A wise man might interpret this to mean that Odin is slain by his own wolf nature, and Thor is slain by his huge animal appetites, and take from it a warning to practice virtue. That is a good and true way of interpreting the story. Another way of looking at it is to look at Loki and Fenrir in terms of Climate Science. I know, you don't think that the Vikings knew anything about climate science, and since you are ignorant of Loki and only know the comic book version, you do not understand the connection. Loki is the god of fire and volcanoes, a sort of combination of Prometheus and Hephaestus. He gave fire to man is when acid falls in his face, his agony causes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. He is a trickster god because fire is a tricky ally. You need it's warmth to live, but it can burn down your house if you are not careful. He is jeolous of Baldur (day) and tricks Hodur (night) into slaying Baldur because fire is jeolous of the greater brilliance of the sun. This is Loki, probably the most intelligent of the Viking Gods though not the wisest. His son Fenrir devours the sun and the moon and brings on winter in which the frost giants of jotunheim lay siege to Valhalla and bring down the gods. Then Fenrir is slain by one of Odin's sons, and Baldur (day) is reborn. A volcano (Loki) erupts, smoke and ash (Fenrir) fill the sky, eating the sun and the moon. Hydrogen sulfide gas becomes sulfuric acid particles in the upper atmosphere causing global cooling and minor or major ice ages. The glaciers (frost giants of jotunheim) advance and destroy the lives of men and their gods. Then the particles clear, the sun returns, and planetary orbit and other variables allowing, Baldur is reborn and a warmer world comes again. It's climate science. Every bit of it is now, verified scientific fact. The gods are personifications of natural forces and their struggles and actions are descriptions of natural phenomena. It is a remarkably accurate description of some climate interactions. So that is another way of interpreting the story. It does not render the first incorrect, they are not mutually exclusive. Both are true within their own context. Another way is too look at it as prophecy. Loki, the god of Fire is nuclear war. Fenrir is nuclear winter. It operates essentially the same, except that this Fenrir is born of man warring with man. A limited nuclear war caused by economic disruptions caused by attempts to fight climate change occurs in the Middle East, the early centers of civilization are destroyed as (so they say) in the Hopo myth. The old world is destroyed by Nuclear Winter (Fenrir), and eventually a new one is reborn. An amusing and depressing line of thought. Well, here is a picture of Fenrir. None of these are mutually exclusive, they can all be true at the same time.

Excellent image - but I don't read too much into mythology or other lore. Usually there is a common thread across the globe and were designed to explain what they couldn't comprehend.

Interesting piece of work here. Like the fiery background with its rich colors and texturing, and also Fenrir's pose. This could have made a nice painting to be hung on a wall.

One wonders what type of canine Fenrir might have been. I'm personally kind of partial towards collies and Siberian huskies. ;)

The composition was something of an accident. The background is reflections of a fractal in the water surface of a sea-sky dome from my freestuff with different experimentations in highlight and shadow settings. The dog is the Daz wolf copied, filtered and overlaid. I couldn't sleep and was playing around.
