Description

Indian Pacific No.18 at Sydney's Central Railway Station. The Indian Pacific is an Australian Passenger Rail Service that operates between Sydney, on the Pacific Ocean, and Perth, on the Indian Ocean. It is one of the few transcontinental trains in the world. The train first ran in February 1970 after the completion of gauge conversion projects in South and Western Australia. The trains route, from Sydney to Perth is 4,352 km (2705 mi) long and includes the world's longest straight stretch of railway track, a 478 km (297 mi) stretch of the Trans-Australian Railway over the Nullarbor Plain. The services provided are Private Service, Platinum Service, Gold Service, Red Service, and Motorail. The average length of a train is 774 m (two locomotives and 30 cars), the average weight is 1,400 tons, the average speed is 85 km/h, max speed 115 km/h and it takes 65 hours to complete one way Traveling by rail in Australia is a good way to see the country and meet people. For non-Australians, there are very good deals for travel over extended periods of time of unlimited travel. But the trains are so slow, that in the 30 days I spent there I ran out of time to take 'The Ghat' from Adelaide to Darwin. This picture was taken on 20 December 2011, Sig... . w

My, I didn't know this. Thanks for the education and the interesting photo. First time I see an Australian train, though I knew they exist. Interesting - the trains have knuckle coupling like USA trains, not the European chain type. Keep up the good work! :-)
