Description

This picture of the skyscrapers of Panama City was taken from one of the islands in the Panama Bay. These buildings were going up as fast as mushrooms after a rain. They were so high and so fancy that it looked almost obscene, when compared with the growth of the rest of the city. There was no infrastructure, and within a few blocks these glittering buildings were replaced by a Third-World environment, with patchy streets, crumbling buildings and poverty. The growth of this downtown development was driven by foreign investment, much of it by China. As was recently disclosed by the News media, several Heads of State, current and past, and some other well-known people, were accused of hiding some of their riches in off-shore accounts facilitated by a Panamanian Law firm. Accusations such as money-laundering and other illegal activities are being alleged. Kind of reminds me of the movie "The Firm' based on John Grisham's book of the same title with Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman. This picture was taken on 19 July 2011, Sig...[

A beautiful skyline to be sure, but not to the benefit of the rest of the city, as you described. The same could be said for Chicago: a glittering downtown skyline, while many neighborhoods deal with crime, gangs, and poverty and others deal with gentrification. And towering above it all is a gorilla in the form of a US$30 billion-plus debt with pensions owed to the police, firefighters, and teachers, among other things.

Panama Papers. Good tie-in. :D

A fine skyline that shows the problems of wealth concentrated in the hands of the few.
