Description

I finally got temporarily caught up with browsing the galleries and commenting so now I can post a few more photos from my vacation in France last year. This montage is more from the Papal palace in Avignon. There was sooooo much there that I can only show some small samples. The Magna Porta shown on the right-hand side was interesting to me because it showed the beheaded icons which were damaged during the revolution and military occupation. I included a closer look in the bottom right corner.

Its wonderful how you have created this collage, Katherine. I love all these details, and also from the perspective from the castle, the looking through. Lucky you, to have seen this all in real, and to have walked there.

Interesting montage of these beautiful captures. I have never been to this region, but wouldn't mind seeing it. The problem is there so many other places I would like to see. I enjoy looking at your vacation pictures very much!

That is one of the things I really love about this site...I can travel with people through their photos and personal descriptions to places I am pretty sure I will not get to see myself. I really appreciate that.

This is in France, but when we see the separate windows and portals, it could be in a king-or-queen-dom anywhere in the world. The upper left window has all the mystery of Gothic architecture, with light at the end of long dark corridors. (Made to evoke the sense of redemption at the end of all things.) The lower left shot shows the way those designers turned stone into tracery and strands. And how light comes through it. The Magna Porta has to be seen in full zoom, because it's very eerie: All those statues with no heads! And whole sections of the arches with no statuary---it's been bared, denuded, and it feels so strange. Also the contrast of the white-to-yellow stone with the blue floor, the deep blues and greens inside, and the dark wooden door gives more striking contrast. The other shots are all pure Gothic. Isn't it amazing how thick their stones were, and yet how dark they could be, and then how illumined? A whole universe inside. A wonderful montage.
