Description

Eve turned toward the voice. The large colonnaded hall ended in a great arch leading to a second room, much gloomier, more oppressive. At its center there was a pod, different from the others. The twilight illumination made it hard to see the details. Eve got closer. As soon as she crossed the arch threshold, the machines began humming and some lights glowed. She looked at the body protruding from the pod. "Oh my ..." she gasped and backed away. Immediately she felt a sense of sadness. "I'm sorry, I should be used to it, but I cannot." the being whispered. "I have no time to create a more acceptable form." Eve braced herself and stepped forward. A hand, a mouth and three eyes stuck out from a shapeless slimy mass of organic matter that overflowed from the pod. However, the sharpness of the being's mind conflicted with the aberrant form of the body. Pain, sadness, resignation. "Who are you?" Eve asked. "Me? I'm an ATM for body pieces." her voice, croaky and tense, vibrated with a note of irony. "When they need spare parts, they force me to make some." The creature waited, but Eve couldn't find anything to say. The images she mind-saw were of unspeakable horror. "You're the telepath, are you?" the creature said. "Don't be surprised, the supercilious ones don't know it, but I feel and I know a lot more than they suspect. They had to give me a nervous system, but they don't realized that their continuous stimuli to produce organs made me evolve. I heard what the technicians were saying when they stimulated this hand for Flaw." "That hand is for Flaw?" Eve asked. "Yes, I have a lot of his DNA." "You're Desmond's sister, are you?" "Desmond? For fuck's sake, no! Desmond hated my brother and often tried to kill him. It's thanks to the Grays he survived, they were too interested in the experiment. We just share Flaw's DNA, as everyone here. Flaw thinks his DNA is the perfect one. I've nothing to do with Desmond. He's the utter bastard who'd kick the kitchen cat. Actually I don't know what a kitchen cat is, but I like the sentence." The creature chuckled. "I provided plenty of spare parts for Flaw, but I have always followed my true brother's advice, the one he whispered to me when he came to see us, me and our mom, clandestinely. When you are in pain time stretches to infinity, so I always asked him: 'What time is it?' and he answered 'It's time to sabotage. In dire straits sabotage may be the only option. They always teach me this, Acme.' He nicknamed me Acme, you know. The pieces I make have always some small flaw, and don't last long." Eve mind-saw a kid sneaking to embrace a woman almost as disemboweled as her mother Sishia. His face was strange, but his eyes were JS's ones. And she saw Flaw punish him cruelly every time they caught him down there. "Your brother?" Eve cried. "Your brother is Jay, Jay Sea?" Acme quivered, the correspondent of a shrug, Eve realized. "I don't know that name. It could be. Our mother loved the sea. She said my bro's grey eyes were of the color of the storming sea. He loved her so much like you your mother." The screams outside the door were becoming more excited. They were discussing whether to use explosives or go on with the thermal lance. "The explosion is not an option!" Lady G-8 roared. "It can damage G-0's cryo-coffin behind the fake wall with his statue. Hurry with that lance, idiots!" "They're coming. May you help me? My brother could not make it the night he set fire to the Body Bank, because they had me locked in another vault. He couldn't reach me, but whispered: 'Sabotage, Acme, do it until I'll be back to free you.' I cannot wait any longer, we cannot wait any longer. Free us, please. After disconnecting the pod-cables, pour that tank content into the pods. They won't be able to recover anything and I'll be free. It's time to die."
