Description
Hi,
Some history here folks, this Loach came straight of the line and was sent direct to Vietnam in 1969.. It served with the 20th Transport Company..
Its records (on the website below) show it served 250 hours from new when, on the 17th August 1970 whilst serving in this Unit, the helicopter was on a recon mission and came under fire at a flight level of 100 feet and 80 knots in South Vietnam and took 11 hits from small arms and automatic weapons. The majority of these hits were on the underside of the aircraft causing damage to the fuel system and some aircraft components. Luckily the armour plating proved effective protecting the flight crew and out of the three crew on board, only one was wounded in action.
The records show that the helicopter made a forced landing and we understand that the helicopter was flown again to a safe area where the maintenance unit considered the aircraft un-flyable and it was effectively underslung from a Huey and returned to the main maintenance unit. At this point the aircraft was assessed and the decision made was that it was beyond economical repair in country and it was shipped back to the Hughes Tool Company. (ALL documents and photos are on the site including full Gold book details).
After it was repaired it was allocated to a National Guard Unit at Waterville and then onto several others..
In 1992, (yep, still going strong) it was selected to sent to the DEA for use.. (records are on the site as well ?!!?)
Anyway, to cut a very long and eventful life short it eventually was bought by a UK collector, and was restored to its full (including Mini gun) spec.
It is now owned by the folks who own Europes ONLY privately run Vietnam rigged Huey (they also have a Cobra under restoration at the moment..)
Bullet holes are still to be seen!!!

I had to wait until the 1980's to learn about helicopter operations. These had some action with women pilots later. I saw them flying over my house in the late 1970's but did not really dig into Hughes type as they had been a competitor on AGILE and the whole seeker got overhyped and then cancelled. All to the smirk of a teen kid who lived with his dad down the street. So, My helicopter world remained fixed at Rye Canyon and the whirl rig I had seen in a job interview in 1965. Barrel rolls, loops rigid rotor could do it all until,... one day... I still am cautious as I red that Huey's can roll 120 degrees not invert.
