Description
Greetings,
Sunday, and a very sunny stunning Shuttleworth airshow.. 'Fly Navy' was a celebration of the Fleet Air Arm, and I must say I was impressed..
Again, at least 4 aircraft I'd not seen flying before this being one.. With Vulcan gone this is the 'car alarm' annoyer' from now on, and it did..
You may think of de Havilland as a maker of Tiger Moth's and the famous Mosquito but, this was the finest and by far the most powerful aircraft they ever made..
The de Havilland Sea Vixen FAW Mk2, the only flying and working example anywhere in the world and its big!
Designed for the the Royal Navy to be used as a missile armed strike fighter, powered by twin Avon engines of 11,250 each.. It was al, weather day or night capable and could also buddy refuel..
She served with 899 squadron on Ark Royal before being converted to a drone, she luckily survived and in 2000 was bought privately.. She is the fastest private owned jet in Europe.. This show was her first for the 2016 season.. And also, first ever at Shuttleworth. She flew with a Sea Hurricane..
She is flown under the Fly Navy Heritage Trust (formally Royal Navy Heritage Flight).
As a side note, its unlikely I'll be going to Legends as most of Legends aircraft are the same as last year or show up elsewhere.. And Foxy Lady is her nickname! lol

Looks like a Bronco, but AIN'T, looks like a P38 but AIN'T! Man, I've heard of the Sea Vixen but don't think I've ever seen one in a hobby shop or Airfix catalogue. This looks SO COOL! I love your comment about car alarm teaser! And, for a carrier plane, it sure looks very big! How many could a carrier take? It would be interesting to know take-off distance and landing distance on a carrier deck! As for the photo, couldn't be better! By the way, are there one or two people in the cockpit? I think I see 2 white helmets. If you're not going to Legends you can post more from the Navy Heritage show. Keep up the good work! :-)

Another Rob "calendar shot." Such a beauty!

Yeah! The Sea Vixen!! The plane with which John Derry crashed, when he wanted to do a supersonic dive at Farnborough Airshow 1952. He and 29 Spectators lost their lifes. The Sea Vixen was a really advanced plane, but somehow the structur of the plane couldn't withstand the forces and so the tragedy unfolded..

The nozzle configuration gives it it's era. amazing to see this and fortunate you can show it.

I've only seen a couple pictures of this model - it must have been a thrill to see it in person. Awesome shot, Rob!

Awesome! Definitely a plane with "character" one has to wonder what the designers were thinking (or doing?) when they offset the cockpit to one side. Definitely a plane I'd like to see up close for myself!
