Description

Hi, Long, long LONG ago, back in the dawn of time when politicians gave a damn about this Country and small stuff like that, we had a rather well known Helicopter maker called Westland.. They made one or two quite well know items at the time (some it might be noted, still being made now under some other 'bastar*' name), this was one of very first generation Helo's.. Designed back in the 1950's for operation of Destroyers (we had those then not these small Frigates (cheap ships) we have now.. Designed to carry homing torpedoes for up to 90 mins, it would eventually carry homing missiles as well.. Old though it was, replaced by more modern helicopters the Wasps were pulled out of storage and sent to the Falklands and, like the Vulcan came their finest moment.. On the 25th April in South Georgia a Wasp crippled a submarine, the first sinceWW2, and the first successful missile attack from RN helicopter.. XT787 rolled of the line at the Fairy Division of Westland on the 10th January 1967, she operated from HMS Leander and HMS Rhyl (with 829sqn) and later went to Portland with 703 sqn. She did go to the Falklands on Leander Destroyers.. She later was sold to the RNZAF due her low hours and was finally retired in 1997. She came back to the UK in 2002 and has brought back to life as you see flying again 2012. She flies over the modern example of Navy Helicopter power the Lynx.. Rob
