Description

On this 26th Annual World War II Weekend and 'Gathering of Warbirds' at the Mid Atlantic Air Museum at Reading, Pa the action was as expected. Besides a large collection of war birds of all kinds, there were many re-enactors representing Americans, Germans, British and Russian troops. The large number of re-enactors in their uniforms and equipment is what makes this gathering so special. There were also a large number of women, both young and old, in period costumes or uniforms. The various branches of service set up their camps, paraded their motorized equipment and re-enacted a battle between German and American troops. Most of the German soldiers were a little portly to be realistic, but they knew it and nobody cared. In the middle of the day all the different services that were represented lined up their armor and other military equipment and drove into Reading, including a limousine representing Mac Arthur's Cadillac and President Roosevelt's limousine. Some of the German officers looked realistically scary. The weather wasn't the best, with the threat of rain and low clouds, but the World War II war birds managed to fly. The only thing that suffered were the aircraft that gave rides, the C-47, B-17, B-29, B-25. It wasn't save enough with the low ceiling and winds. On the other hand the gloomy atmosphere made the whole scene very realistic. There were plenty of guest speakers, telling their World War II experiences, but sadly many that had been there previously have either passed away or are no longer able to attend. This picture was taken on 3 June 2016, Sig...

@Richardphotos. Most of them couldn't speak German since they were all Americans. Only one of them was actually born in Germany!

Wow, Sig! The reenactors must have brought your dad's experiences to mind. I would have loved to see the whole display of planes, equipment, and men.

Well, they all looked a little too well fed, sort of like Schultze on 'Hogan's Heroes' . All the soldiers I remember were lean and mean. But all these reactors, whether they portrait Germans, British, Russian or Americans provide their own clothing and equipment and they are doing a fantastic job.
