Description

This is for T.rex, he was asking what the difference was between Merlin and Griffon engined Seafires was... Well, it's this.. This is Kennet Aviations stunning (and very fast) Supermarine Seafire Mk XVII, based at North Weald.. It was built in 1946, and as far as is known never served with a front line or reserve unit, It was stuck off with extremely low hours in 1955 and re-discovered on a scrap heap in 1973.. It re flew in 2006 60 years to the day since its first flight.. It now has Fleet Air Arm colours. As it should.. Power plant: 1.850 hp Rolls Royce Griffon. Max Speed (with full Fleet kit) 387 mph. Other aircraft of this type served on active service in Korea and Beyond. It is very lively at shows.. Up till the new rules....... Rob

Dedi to me? Aw, THANKS! This is such a good photo. And the difference - Merlin vs Griffon is clearly discernable. For some reason my brain keeps forgetting Griffons were Rolls Royce engines. Good English quality and engineering, there, too. Interesting it was built after the war and stricken after only 9 years. And then, discovered in a scrap heap (of all places! Wonder how it got there!). Is that the 1946 color scheme, or is it modern fleet air arm? Thanks again, and keep up the good work! :-)

Looks like four bladed propeller. Can't really see the cam cover clearance bumps. I do know that the Griffon is an older design based on the sea plane record setting engine of many more liters than the Merlin.
