Description

This is me, your intrepid photographer, at Elephant Hill Trail at Canyonlands. I've never really fully understood why people travel to foreign & exotic places & feel obliged to take photos of themselves in front of every sight they see. Is it to prove that they were really there? Do they think that friends & family who view the photos might suspect that they faked the trip? Or is it just narcissism? When someone shows me a photo of themselves in front of an interesting or beautiful place, I'm generally thinking something like "I can see you in person right in front of me, why did you have to go block out a chunk of this fantastic view with your body?". In this age of selfies, I'm clearly in the minority on this subject, but I'm fine with that. So why did I post this? Because I also believe rules are meant to be broken, so, on very rare occasions, I will appear in photos of my travels. Speaking of which, I'll be taking off for a short road trip tomorrow morning that will take me to Portland, Mt. Rainier National Park & the upper Oregon coast, so I will be offline for about a week or so & hopefully will have photos to share when I return... Please zoom.

I echo your feelings on "selfies". That said I've really enjoyed your Elephant Hill Trail series. A great collection of superb shots.

We were just having that conversation a couple of days ago with a woman who lives here in the summer and spends most of her time traveling. None of us have very many pictures of ourselves in front of stuff!

But it's good to see you, my friend. :) If you were in every picture I'd probably come down there and slap you silly, but once in a while it's really nice to see distant friends. :)

Have a great time on your trip! I'll look forward to seeing your pictures of Mount Rainier, in particular. It will be fun to see it through your eyes!

the view is far more important for myself. portraits should be done where a background is not going to dominate the picture and vice versa. very hard to do justice to either when they interfere

Oh yes, narcissism taken to the maximum in this cool photo. Lots of stark contrast in this one. I never show photos of myself because it would invite scorn, shock and revulsion from the viewers. I am not photogenic at all, especially at my very advanced age. Anyway, have a nice photo prolific trip to Oregon.
