The Devil's Right Hand
"Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand..."
Greetings all. The title and lead off words are taken from a Steve Earl song called appropriately enough "The Devil's Right Hand." Being from the New Mexico Territory ...ok yeah, I guess we are a state now .. I see lots of people walking around with one strapped to their hip or tucked under their shirt.
So for those that do carry please be the example not the problem. Practice the rules you know to live by and use the up most safety and clarity of thought. If you say "what rules?" please...please...please carefully lock your weapon in a safe place and go take some basic classes before you pick it up again. You are metaphorically carrying a rattlesnake on your person, so handle it accordingly and train with it often.
At the very least:
Always keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction.
Treat ALL firearms as if they were loaded.
Keep your trigger finger outside the trigger guard and off of the trigger until you are ready to fire.
Be certain of your target, your line of fire, and what lies beyond your target.
Always wear appropriate eye and ear protection when shooting and maintaining your firearm.

Yes we have some really odd laws compared with the rest of the world. For example a person on a Terror Watch List can freely buy all the guns and ammo they want. Yet a U..S. Citizen who possesses a Medical Cannabis Card approved by the State is technically guilty of a Federal Crime if they possess a firearm.

The good old right to bear arms, gosh it really doesn't bear thinking about. Reminds me of that episode of the Simpsons where Homer starts using a gun to switch the light off and for all kinds of other stupid reasons. A solution or part of the problem?

Homer is not that far-fetched. You-Tube is choc full of examples of idiots treating guns like the pets chew toy. Sadly some don't live to be laughed at for being such morons.
Tragically last week Zurlon Tipton (Former CMU and Indianapolis Colts running back) accidentally shot and killed himself at a Roseville car dealership while transferring a gun from his vehicle into a duffle bag. He is one of the many cases of mishandled firearms death. When we add in Criminal, Domestic Violence induced, and suicides the list goes on forever.

Good advice--and what a great character! And ear protection in target shooting is a must--my uncle ruined his hearing by being careless about that, though he was an incredible marksman. It made his old age harder than it needed to be.
