Description

The statues of Ludwig van Beethoven and Calderon de la Barca (a 17th century Spanish dramatist) are flanking the entrance to the Teatro Nacional, the most famous theater in Costa Rica, located in the center of San Jose. The story has it when a noted European Opera Company, featuring the talented singer Adelina Patti, was on a Latin American tour but declined to perform in Costa Rica for lack of a suitable hall. This triggered an immediate reaction by the coffee elite to put a special cultural tax on coffee exports, at the time the biggest export of the country, for the construction of a world-class theater. Construction began in 1890 and was completed in 1897. At the time of the theaters completion the population of San Jose was 19,000. This picture was taken on 16 December 2004, Sig...

Fine photo Sig! Went and checked Beethoven out (1770-1827),...only drawing of him that survives shows him with a neat haircut. He allowed hair to be snipped from him while on his deathbed. These hair samples have since shown an amazing high concentration of lead which probably accounted for his health problems to include deafness. Maybe they also made him appear grumpy? :-)

Your photos are always presented in such an interesting way that reading your narratives are most agreeably compelling. A superb capture to pay tribute to this great and tremendous composer.
