Description

Junks like these are being used to bring tourists to Ha Long Bay, a World Heritage Site. Leaving the port city of Ha Long, just northeast of Haiphong, they sail several miles into the Bay for an overnight stay.among the 3,000 carboniferous chalk islets out of sight of the coast. .Activities include a visit to one of the many caves, observing fisherman that live among the islands, watch wildlife, mostly sea birds, and watch the magnificent sun rises and sunsets. At this time of year, August, it is calm, very warm and very humid. Besides some excellent sea food and alcoholic beverages, overnight accommodations are in air-conditioned (window-units) cabins. Swimming and kayaking are a couple of activities that are offered. Ha Long Bay is part of the Gulf of Tonkin, where in August 1964 a North Vietnamese gunboat allegedly fired on the USS Maddox, which escalated the Vietnamese War. great capture Sig and not too long before that I was denied entry into the service. I still think about all of the men and women that did not return home alive. I feel fortunate that I did not have to go as I probably would have ended up there and may have a casualty
