Denis triumphantly serves Hugo with a summons for cheating on his liquor taxes at his nightclub and spending the extra money on lavish gifts to the chorus girls - well you know why. In case you are utterly confused, as well you might be, Hugo is a night club owner and father of the plump and pretty Mathilde who started this scene in her boudoir. Josette is Mathilde’s cousin on her mother’s side who just was hired as a chorus girl at the club.
