Description

A character sketch of international jewel thief Hatta Mari strolling along, probably contemplating a little "window shopping" in the Diamond District. This is another experiment with the Poser 11 Comic Book Preview mode, as executed in Manga Studio 5. The figure is a mix of V4 and the Girl 4 (with a hint of Aiko thrown into the brew). The background is -- I admit -- some royalty free clip art with a texture from MS5 applied via a layer mask. Textures for the Dark Rose outfit (available at Daz) were created in Photoshop.

Thank you so much for posting something different, something new...I'm so tired of the warriors, faes, elves...images and of mediocre photographies. I really like this creation of yours ; I should give this fonction a try.

Thank you so much for saying that. If you're interested in this technique, drop me a line and I'll pass on some links that were instrumental in helping me learn how to use the Live Comic Book Preview mode in Poser 11. I may eventually do a video tutorial on it, but I doubt I'll have time to get to it this year.

Once again, there is much to love here! Your unique approach to comic creation makes for such a cool distinctive style. Something I'm a particular fan of and strive for in my own work, is creating a sense of character through pose and expression... something that you've really hit the nail on the head with here. There is also a sense of fun directly related to the character's name and sense of style. Additionally, the design element is strong here, well constructed and a good font choice. Awesome all around! ;-)

Thanks, bud! I appreciate the kind words. As you've seen from my earlier tests, I'm really trying to "sell" the characters by focusing on the basics of composition (which includes pose, of course). I'm reading Will Eisner's Comics and Sequential Art, glancing back through_ Understanding Comics,_ and reading a lot of classic comics (especially work by Alex Toth), trying to make myself take things to the next level in terms of composition, character and storytelling. I wouldn't call this hard work, but it's definitely considered and thought out. I'm doing a lot of sketches and thinking about pacing in an effort to get this stuff right. And working with Hatta Mari makes that a little easier. She's a fun character to work with. By giving her a little more hip, a little more booty, a sly expression and just that sexy glance over her bare shoulder, she comes alive. I think for her, she's the kind of person who would never just "walk" into a room -- she slinks like a kitty or struts like she owns the place. In either case, all eyes would be on her... and that's just the way she likes it!

Thanks again -- I value your opinions.

The only way is up ? ah, right the first heist must be up in one of those towers !

The shading on the skyline looks great as does your character's, not too sure about the arch of her back, seems very exaggerated and un-natural, but maybe that's the look you were going for, just a suggestion.

~Cheers~

I see what you mean, but I'm okay with the arch of the back. Yeah, it's a little exaggerated, but I don't mind it because it helps make it look more hand drawn and less precisely 3D. Same with that absurdly large hair -- this works in a graphic image, but not reality. The only thing I'm not happy with is the inclusion of her elbow behind her back. I should have brought her arm forward a bit so we don't see the elbow. I thought about editing it out, but then the front of her left arm would just be floating out there.

Thanks for mentioning the skyline; I'm actually pleased with just how dramatic it looks. I think a lot of the energy in this image comes from the boldness of the background tone.

Thanks again for the observations!
