Description

A glance inside Fort Knox, Maine. A requirement for a fort to block entry of enemy ships up the Penobscot River was developed about 1820. Construction began in 1844. The fort was completed in 1864 during the Civil War. It was then declared obsolete and never manned. But what a place to explore...

Fascinating architecture, Bill. Odd patterns of floor tiles that just seem to end arbitrarily in the middle of the room - I wonder if they had a purpose...

Oh shoot, wrong Fort Knox. I was going to ask you to bring me a sample. Obsolete by the time it was finished? Sounds like a typical government job. This is a fantastic image and perfect in black and white.

You really nailed the exposure here, Bill! The stone texture is so wonderful. A great photo, my friend! I could spend hours here!

This would be a fantastic space for some art installations (temporary, of course). I can imagine all sorts of changing light and suggestive shadows, and maybe some theatre. The audience would have to be on the move, too.

Arches on the floor, too, showing where guns were positioned. Very good photo of fortification architecture. I assume you have a few more of this place. More posts in the coming? I'd like to see them. Keep up the good work! :-)

I just did 40 minutes in tara's gallery, and now I will do 40 in yours. And I told her it was "part 1," just as it will be in yours. In your case, I go back to november because there are shots I missed going back that far. (I saw everything, but I didn't comment. It's one of the perils of being off RR for long periods.)

I've said to you that you do black and white beautifully...I still remember your vietnam shots on film; they were a revelation. This has real mystery and glow, real darks and then real lights in the brick and stone, as if they're glowing from within. And your composition brings out the deep cavern feeling of the place, and how thick and imposing those arches are. Beautiful study in repetition of form, and of light in darkness. You picked the right medium for this---black and white. Beautiful.
