Description

(It's huge...better zoomed) Recently, I've been doing birthdays privately, but today I make an exception. Harry (goodoleboy) has been visited by a tidal-wave of health problems, mixed with (as he openly states) age: 89 years, this day...I'm almost 68, and I know how age drops in for a visit one day, then never leaves; and it brings its "friends" with it, attacking bones, muscles, organs, walking, you name it. So, I feel for anyone who's been suddenly deluged by it. He came through debilitating back problems last year, to enter into a conglomerate of health problems, this year; while he kept photographing, postworking and hitting the pavement until very recently. He still does it, but it's been seriously curtailed. I hope he can get his strength back soon: He's fought valiantly, and I admire him for that greatly. Harry did technical illustration for a long time, and I was privileged to see some of it: Exacting to the core, yet elegant, beautiful, and masterful. Today, it's done with computers: But he did it with pen and ink, and T-Squares, French Curves, compasses, you name it. Having done it myself (years back), I can attest it's a thankless, endless task. You pour over every stroke, with no "undo". And if you do it accurately---he drew for major aviation companies, where accuracy was madnatory---you've done a fine job. But if you do it with aesthetic grace and delicacy: You've made art. Harry made art. He's been photographing for years, doing lush flower series, lagoons, etc; but also a lone leaf on pavement, or 2 twigs or just shadows. Some of the most poetic shots I've seen, here, were his simple leaves on striated pavement. He doesn't just look for the photogenic. He explores everything. The 'universe beneath our feet'. And I greatly respect him for that. And doing that with wrenching back and abdominal pains, and eye problems, fatigue, etc is a huge challenge. (LA's heat and drought don't help!) So I wanted to make something special for him. I got back from dental work, and I'm a littttttttle loopy, lol, and I hope the drugs don't show: But I made this today, mainly because I couldn't get it to work before. And if you ask, "why an old car?" It has nothing to do with age: It's because that was the only drawing I ever did for Harry, and because he's done whole series of cars over the years: I wanted to honor one of the many topics he's found beauty in. The surrounding art is my usual whacky hues and galactic soups: Maybe not the best backgrounds for a car, but they're mine; so I included them... With that, I wish Harry a much better year ahead, w/ much improved health, and the strength to overcome those oppressions he's lived with so long. And to give my gratitude and celebration for all his years of doing art "from the ground up," in both the lush and beautiful (really, his rose series is just delicious) to the meticulous and everyday. As a poet said: "The poem is right under the table, people: Find it..." Happy Birthday, Harry, and many, many more; and may the gods of strength become friends with your gods of poetry and light, and give you all the healing in the world. Peace and shining light, friend, and a great New Year ahead,
Mark (again, please zoom!) ------------------------------

What a fabulous dedication for our friend. It is just such thing Harry would love. And I love your car drawing and how you also made it looks like one-lined drawing is beyond me. Very beautiful it is. :-)

Mark, first of all let me say how moved I was by this warm and thoughtful birthday dedication for Harry. I am saddened to hear about his health issues and will include him in my prayers. Thanks so much for sharing a little bit about Harry with us and a bit of yourself also. The one thing I do know is the world is blessed when it can begin a new year with people like you and Harry in it. Happy New Year

OMG, what a splendid and unique set of auto drawings and background in this fabuloso birthday dedication, Mark, plus the deep, inclusive and heartfelt text below. Thank you so much for this. As for the auto, to me it suggests an old and luxurious Bentley or Rolls Royce. And what stunning variations to go along with the nonpareil penmanship! You came up with a masterpiece of dedication despite your current health problems. I am humbled in reaction to this professional presentation reflecting the tons of years I've spent on this mortal coil. And I may be the oldest - in age - member on Renderosity. I also want to thank the above commenters that added their good wishes. This makes me feel better despite my health problems. Oh, I also used proportional dividers, pencils, isometric protractors, triangles, and xacto knives when I did technical illustration. Best of luck to you, Mark, on your upcoming dental procedures.

Beautiful art and words. A wonderful dedication and gift for Harry. And I suspect why a classic car was chosen. Today so many cars are utilitarian. Your drawing takes us back to a time when cars were art. Hand made, polished lacquer and hand rubbed wood. So you made art from art and gave it to an artist. How appropriate.

First of all, I like to say this to Mark, how dynamic each panel looks, with a different background colour - it's an outstanding dedication for someone, who is a real friend to you and which you seem to understand so well and secondly, hold on to your hat now Harry, I would like to add this, by wishing you on your 'Birthday Anniversary', much better and good health again and real happiness for the NEW YEAR 2017 and beyond...

Also for Harry, I feel, that this is foremost an art-site and I do not like to bringing up personal misgivings you have had, or may still have about me (?) - because that is in the past and I like letting go of feeling so hurt, for personal peace of mind and perhaps you can too ?

This is really awesome, Mark, and what a great dedication to Harry! My thoughts and prayers are with him, and I hope 2017 brings him better health.

I'm beginning to find out about that "visit" from age..... But I refuse to submit! In the words of Jyn Erso, "I rebel!"

Happy New Year to you and yours!

I love that car. That's a CAR! I've seen a couple of 12-cylinder Deusenbergs, and they have this kind of presence. Love what you did with the background!
