Description

At the top of the Wank Mountain. Wank Mountain is located in the Loisach Valley near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It rises from 700 m (2,300-ft) to 1780 m (5,840-ft) at its grassy top. In 1911 the Wank-Haus was completed, a mountain hut. It since has been upgraded several times and now has a restaurant and provides overnight accommodations. Wank Mountain is a popular destination for hikers, day-trippers, and paraglides, who use the favorable thermals for long glides to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and other locations. Construction of the Wankbahn, a cable car system, was begun in 1928 and completed in 1929. The Wankbahn is 3 km (1.9 m) long and rises from 740 m (2,430-ft) to 1.750 m (5,740-ft). At the upper terminal of the Wankbahn is a second restaurant..
