Description

Princess? Goddess? Warrior? I don't know exactly who this statue represents, but I like it a lot. It sits in an outdoor seating area of an Asian restaurant in our neighborhood that we frequent...

Thanks, you're probably right, though I've never seen her in this particular pose.

as t13v0m suggests, it could be Kwan Yin (Guanyin) who you're obviously familiar with. The pose would be her opening her arms to welcome the souls of the world, as she was the bodhisattva who "heard the sounds of the world" (or the cries of the world). Her ornament is in line with traditional Guanyins, and it shows that deep Indian influence and all its visual 'dance' across a surface, with a Chinese, Korean or Japanese face. A fitting entry for a place of eating. (You probably know that Guanyin is based on Avilokiteshvara, the Indian male version, who also hears the cries of the world.) You caught her in profile, lined with the lines of the background, and with yellow and black dividing the background as a tapestry for her. Your angle gives us some of her front, so we can see her elaboration. A sensitive photo, with fine light on her. Her way of holding her gown---arms way up, hands bent down---is unusual, gracious and embracing. Fitting for a place where someone feeds you...

This is unmistakably Indian, but it has a feeling of Art Nouveau, with the flowing robes and the organic motifs. Beautiful!
