The missing man formation is an aerial salute performed as part of a flypast of aircraft at a funeral or memorial event, typically in memory of a fallen pilot. The formation is often called the "missing man flyby" or "flypast".

I remember the series too, and didn't know he had passed. A glittering dedi to his work, with nasa's image used seamlessly behind those ships. And the ships leaving their own "star trail" behind them. Thanks for the quotes too. A fine dedi, Rod, I'm sorry about his passing; he wasn't a very old man...Hope you're feeling better tonight; I know that job can wear you down. Hope you're getting better each day.
