Sewer cover in the town of Krems, Austria. This two-headed bird is depicted on the coat of arms of Krems - no idea what it means or signifies...

Great find

The 2 headed bird was a symbol of the Austro-Hungarian empire. One body, 2 heads - one empire, 2 nations. Nice that they have preserved these sewer lids. Keep up the good work! :-)

Can you imagine setting all those bricks? I love the look, but you would have to get into a certain frame of mind to sit there day after day doing that. Such a satisfying picture!

TRex is spot on: It's a symbol of the Austro-Hungarian empire. In symbolism, a 2-headed bird symbolizes Empire. It's not just indigenous to Austria. (I was gonna do a bad comedy bit on the 2 heads, but I couldn't think of one.) Anyway, you have a 'flatness' in this image, having something to do with flush-forward hues and textures, which makes it pop off the page. It jumps out at us. The metal work and mosaic both have electricity, and the hues are very vivid. Zoom's essential! A really fine job with a simple manhole cover: This kind of electricity is one of your specialties. I love this!
Claude I'm at over an hour in your (always consummate) gallery, and I have to move on. But I hope to be back for another session before I step down again. I could be here all day, though, from the magic of your work. I'll be back, but great stuff; your way with architecture and urban forms is utterly alive and attuned...
