Description

In this picture the Apache Trail winds along Canyon Lake, the third of the four lakes along the Salt River and the smallest. The Apache Trail was constructed as a supply route to the construction site of Roosevelt Dam. It followed an old trail used by the Apache along the Salt River through the rugged desert mountains of the Superstition Mountains. The distance from Apache Junction to the Roosevelt Dam is 42 miles and is known as State Route 88. The first 20 miles from Apache Junction are paved 3 miles passed Tortilla Flat. Route 88 is considered the oldest highway in Arizona. The Trail is within the Superstition Wilderness Area of the Tonto National Forest, thus being protected against encroachment and development. Roosevelt Dam was named after President Theodore Roosevelt who was instrumental in the passing of the Federal Reclamation Act of 1902. As a result, the Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District (SRP) was formed on February 7, 1903 and tasked with providing an agricultural water supply.and flood control. Following the creation of SRP, construction of Roosevelt Dam commenced in 1905 and was completed in 1911. Today, there are four dams along the Salt River and two along the Verde River, all providing agricultural and municipal water supply to the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, the Valley of the Sun. Additionally, all six dams not only act as flood control and water suppliers, they also provide recreational use for boaters and for fishing and all are capable of generating some electric power. Water delivered to municipalities or agricultural entities is co-mingled, meaning it consists of a mix of stored surface water from winter runoff and pumped groundwater. The mix depends on the availability of the stored water. All golf courses in the Valley must use reclaimed water, and the maximum use per year is 3.6- feet.
