Description


The Saguaro Cactus is native to the Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona and Sonora, Northern Mexico. The Saguaro is an arborescent , tree-like, cactus. It is slow-growing, in 70 years it can reach a height of 6 1/2 ft., produce its first arm, and produces the first flowers. It only reproduces through seeds of the flowers. At the age of 95-100 years it can reach a height of 15 to 16 ft. and it may reach a height of 70-ft and live to over 150 years. Here in Southern Arizona it occurs at elevations up to about 3,000-ft. In this photo, in the Superstition Mountains Wilderness Area of the Tonto National Forest it is one of several types of cacti. The large, treelike cactus on the left is a type of Cholla. The clear area in the right side of the photo appears to be an ephemeral wash Saguaro are protected by law in Arizona and removal of part or all of a cactus is punishable by fines and/or imprisonment. I got out the car in new Mexico just to walk a little after riding a lot. Anyway there was some Cactus to look at. The man driving told me not to get in the grass as there was Cactus there. I thought I did not get into the grass but i guess I did as my socks was full of sharp needles lol very good photo
