Description
My grandson Eligh standing in front of a very tall cactus. Eligh, who is 14, is now as tall as I am (5'10"), so i'm guessing that this cactus is over 25 feet tall. This was taken at the University of California at Berkeley Botanical Gardens, which has a world class collection of cacti, as well as many other types of plants & trees. Our trip was not very well planned - we arrived at the gardens at 4:13 in the afternoon & it was closing at 5:00. I told the young lady at the admission booth that it didn't seem fair that we had to pay full admission price for such a short time. She said we could wait 2 minutes & then be admitted for free, which was an offer we couldn't refuse. I would have preferred to have paid for admission & had more time to explore, as we were very rushed, but we made the most of our time there.
This cactus is an echinopsis terscheckii & was planted from seed imported from Argentina in 1956. Echinopsis terscheckii, commonly known as the cardon grande cactus or Argentine saguaro, is a large cactus native to South America and popular in cultivation. It is a columnar, branching cactus that can grow over 7.6 metres (25 ft) tall.

Weird how they said you could go in for free if you waited 2 minutes. And then you didn't have much time...Well, you got a tall glistening capture, with lots of late day light, and lots of intense textures in the trees and bushes, making them almost a textile. Eligh is waving, and his arm rolls right into the vertical movement of this shot. And his black t-shirt makes him stand out brilliantly. A very satisfying shot, with lots of texture and upward motion.
(If I saw a cactus like this in Chicago? I'd think I'd lost my mind...)
