Description

__________________________________________________________ The maelstroms, gigantic marine vortices A maelstrom, or malstrom, is a powerful whirlwind that forms in the sea or in a river. Danish malstrøm consisting of male ("turn") and strøm ("current") related to the English stream. It can be created by a current of tide or by the current of a river. The term comes from a zone particularly turbulent by the tidal current between two of the Lofoten islands in Norway. It has assumed the legendary proportions of a kind of funnel from which no boat could come out, like the Sicilian Charybdis. It is used by Edgar Allan Poe for his new A Descent in the Maelstrom, by Jules Verne in Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea and in A Wintering in the Ice and by Arthur Rimbaud in "The Drunk Boat". In the final battle of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones ships clashing around a gigantic maelstrom. This term comes from the northern mythology which describes a gigantic and extremely powerful whirlpool that engulfs ship and human beings. These vortices are present everywhere on earth and are associated either with strong marine currents which change direction periodically, or with outings of rivers. The most powerful maelstrom is also near the Lofoten islands, the Saltstraumen. The climate near the Lofoten Islands is extremely stormy which is one of the factors that give birth to these great whirlpools. Every six hours, 400 million cubic meters of water flow at speeds of up to 20 knots (40 km / hour) into a 150-meter-wide and 3-kilometer-long inlet that connects the Saltenfjord Skjerstadfjord. The maelstrom is dangerous for small boats because it forms a funnel into which the surface water rushes. These vortices are present everywhere on earth and are associated either with strong marine currents which change direction periodically, or with outings of rivers.
