Description
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Litchfield Park, besides performances by elementary and middle school pupils, a few classic cars, a few military vehicles and some old farming equipment were on display. This is a cotton seed planter from around the last turn of the century. Cotton was already being grown in the Salt River Valley and Litchfield Park, the small town, started as a cotton farm.
This seeder is being pulled or towed, in the front of the seeder are two bow-like plows, that open the furrows, the two cans hold cotton seed, and the wheels are designed to cover the seeds. The distance between the two plows is the distance needed to irrigate the fields via flood irrigation. Cotton in this area is usually planted in April and harvested in October or November.
