Description

For the Centennial Celebration of Litchfield Park, the Litchfield Park Elementary School District had students of the various elementary and middle schools in its district perform for the parents. Also artwork and paintings by students of the District were on display. As I strolled through the exhibit and looked at the displays I saw this painting. My first thought was, 'Looks like a Picasso'. It looked like Cubism, an early 20th-century avant-garde art movement which was created by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. I thought, properly framed and exhibited among other artists of that period, it would blend right in. And given a well-known name, who knows how much it would fetch. But this picture was painted by a fifth grader of the School District. The next thing that went through my mind, what inspired her to paint this? What went through her head?. Perhaps it was a class assignment to emulate the style? I've experienced similar deja vu when looking at children's art, and then I learn that they were given specific assignments based on a lesson in which they were exposed to a classic modern artist. Children are often so much better at emulating those styles than adults.

I like that child's drawing a lot, btw!

It also was suggested to me that she may have seen something on the internet that may have given her that idea. Whatever, I think this is an amazing drawing for a fifth grader and totally different from anything else that was on exhibit!
