Description

From one kind of plumbing to another! On my way to the bus stop, and...WHAT'S THIS? May 28, 2017 Almost the entire length of the street was dug up. About 1 ½ meters deep. Er, what for? Civic repairs. At the upper right you can see dirty black pipes (actually the insulation covering them) belonging to the city's central heating system. Trash is recycled here. All burnable trash goes to central heating stations where it is burned and the heat transferred to water at 120 degrees Celcius (248 degrees Farenheit) and a pressure of 16 bar at the most. The water is pumped through this insulated pipe system to buildings in town. Each building has a heat exchanger system which transfers heat to the buildings water supply which is 50 degrees Celcius for water and 80 degrees Celcius for heating, all at a pressure of 6 bar. The street has been dug up for maintenance and for laying new pipes and new control valves. Orange pipes are for electric cables and water hose (HOSE, NOT pipes!). Yellow pipes are for Internet cables. Enjoy!

Interesting way to heat the town. Very different from the individual home method.

Interesting. I've never heard of a heating system for a town. We all have individual heating systems for our homes. Of course apartment buildings have heating systems for the building, but there's no "central" system.

Interesting shot and information about the infrastructure.. I don't think there's anyplace in the USA that uses central heating provided by the city anymore.

Very little smog/smoke due to highly efficient burning. And they have smoke filters with a thought to the environment. The whole system is very environmentally thought through. Saves money, too.

Like Iceland and Northern California uses geothermal steam. In the Northern US everything must be more than 6 feet deep to avoid frost heaves. And when a lane is to be added to the street it all must be dug up.
