Hi, My name is Bill and I am updating my homepage to reflect a wonderful event in my life...marriage, September 18, 2010, to my best friend Tara...known to many of you as auntietk here on Renderosity.
We "met" shortly after I joined Renderosity in August 2008. We share a love for photography and indeed all types of art.
We live north of Seattle and enjoy getting to share photographic excursions and information with other Renderositians ( is "Renderositians" even a word? ). LOL
As for me, it seems like I've been taking pictures all my life but I didn't get serious enough to purchase my first Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera until May 2008. In May 2009 I upgraded from an Olympus E-510 to an Olympus E-30 with a wide variety of lenses.
My subject areas of interest include absolutely everything but with a frequent return to airplanes, cars, tanks, etc., ...or as Tara says, machines that make lots of noise;-)
If you are curious, I am pictured above in a Grumman Corsair on a taxiway of the Kansas City Downtown Airport. I used to fly and train others to fly airplanes. That will explain my frequent forays into the world of aviation. Last but by no means least, thanks to Pannyhb for introducing me to Renderosity. The moment I saw it I was hooked.
Fine print: Yes, the photo above is a photo manipulation:-)

Very interesting image Bill. Looking at it, it looks like a tricky exposure but you seemed to have nailed it. I have no clue BTW :)

I was going to say it looks like fermentation tanks but the salt puts me off.
photosynthesis
We used to use that exact same brand of salt crystals to soften our well water, so I'm going to guess that it's some kind of water treatment device (though wysiwg's fermentation tank guess sounds good too)...

desalination plant is my thought
jayfar
I think it's a water softener or a beer brewing kit !!!
blinkings
No idea mate but it's very interesting.

My assumption is a desalination plant. Modern equipment in an old building. Nice photo of it. You really have an eye for things like this. Keep up the good work! :-)

I have no idea...but it's certainly cool....

Looks like a good place to hide a dead body.

The answer to, "What is it?": Two winners...photosynthesis and jayfar! This is water softening equipment used between 1909 and sometime in the 1940s when this old water pumping plant switched from steam to diesel for pumping water from the Rio Grande River for irrigation. Water must be softened before being turned into steam for a steam engine or it will foul the many pipes in the boilers and ruin the boilers with mineral deposits. Special credit goes to Andrea for thinking out of the box:)

Well, it appears I'm late to the party, but I was going to say the same as .photosynthesis and jayfar - some kind of water-softening apparatus. Then again, it could be that thing the Girls are looking for! LOL
Really cool and detailed shot of it, Bill!

Your picture makes it look so much cleaner than it actually was!! That tank looks clean enough to run milk through or something. A terrific shot, showing off the volume of the room. Nice work!

Good one Andrea. I didn't have a clue!!

you told us what it was after 9 comments, which means that everyone after those 9 comments was left out to dry. There's a lawsuit in there somewhere. BUT. (And yes, that was a loud 'BUT'.) You're ALL wrong: It's a boiler unit being lifted and redied for launch. C'mon, LOOK at it, dammit: It's being hoisted up in Cape Kennedy, and that "Solar Salt"? It's going to the sun to return their damned salt, because it's wayyyy to salty and gives high blood pressure. (Water softening my ass! Water's plenty soft! Ya ever get a cut from water? Case closed...) As a photo, it's a big melange of verticals and horizontals and light and shadow, and I love the 'din' and geometry of it; and the blues of the bags on bottom (love the color contrast). A big profusion of a shot, and I love it.
(You may not have known this---this is for real, now---solar salt is what they use to melt ice on the sun. You smirk, but you gotta figure, that's some heavy duty ice if the sun's heat doesn't melt it...so they contract Americans to make salt that'll melt it. Stop me before I make a total ass of myself. I'll move on...)
