Thanks to you all for your comments on my photos of Swedish graduation and on the central heating construction project.
This morning I had the opportunity to talk to one of the men working on the project. He corroborated my suspicions. The short pipe segments with 3 "fingers" are for manually regulating the flow of hot water in the system. Also, the old pipes are in many instances left where they are in order to provide firm support for the new pipes, which are mounted on top of the old pipes. In fact, some of the old pipes are kept and new pipes welded fast to the old ones. This can be seen in the lower part of the large image, where a dirty old pipe is welded to a new pipe, covered in white plastic. The white plastic sleeves around the weldings will be filled with an insulating material (self-expanding urethane foam?)
I'll continue photographing the progress of this work.
Tomorrow I will start with the Medieval Festival. Since there are so many photos, perhaps I should alternate between the festival and construction photos, so you don't get bored.
Enjoy!

fascinating work

it would be difficult to use the automatic cable burying machines that is seen here. they force a cable through underground using the force of a water jet. then they pull whatever cable they need

Fascinating photos of this installation - even pipe-installing can be art! Seems like a logical and efficient way to utilize the old piping to support the new.
Your photo tours are not boring at all, Michael. I enjoy them!
