Description

These geysers are in Rotorua, North Island. The area around Rotorua is compared to Yellowstone in the United States, very volatile. There have been over 200 earth quakes within the last year in the Rotorua area. Some of the energy is used to heat homes. There are no nuclear power plants in New Zealand, and there are no longer any coal fired power plants. Most of the energy generated is hydroelectric, mostly in the South Island. Even the look of this place reminds me of Yellowstone. Did you read that between the 9th and 14th of June, Yellowstone had over 400 earthquakes?

Wild looking country side! Very volcanic. I concur with bmac62 - Yellowstone had had an unusual amount of seismic activity in 5 days. I wonder how an eruption thee will affect all these sites around the world. Keep up the good work, but be careful! :-)

@bmac62! No Bill, I hadn't read it. I wouldn't worry about how an eruption at Yellowstone would affect other sites around the world. I would worry about how it would affect the United States. Look what Mt. St. Helen did to the western United States, and on a earthquake scale Mt. St. Helen wasn't very much. But if Yellowstone erupts with the potential it has, or if the area around Rotorua erupts on that scale, I think we would be in serious trouble. The Rotorua area has twelve lakes and the entire area is with a caldera, 22 km across, that was formed after a gigantic eruption about 1.5 million years ago.

A gorgeous view of these geysers, in this magnificent photo. Your narrative reminds me of the same use of the geothermic energy tapped in Iceland, from which the word 'geyser' originates !
