Description

The JFK gravesite, Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. It is estimated that more than 16 million people have visited this site since 1963. We were fortunate the day we visited...there were only 35 or 40 other people there...I waited my turn to get close for a picture and snapped away. The coins left by folks are a tradition...there are lots of legends going back to Roman times about why coins are left, but the simplest one is that it is a sign for the family that their loved ones have not been forgotten.

Still brings back strong emotions. When I was there it was just John. I wonder if Jackie asked to be buried there or if it was Caroline? A very poignant scene bringing to mind the question "What might have been?"

I almost didn't notice the flame. I was 10 years old when JFK was running for president in 1960. He appeared at a campaign event in my neighborhood in Queens (NYC) & I got to shake his hand. On 11/22/63, the principal of our school called everyone into the assembly hall & gave us the news of his assassination. It seemed unreal - how could something like that happen in modern day America?

A moving photo of the memorial, Bill!

I still remember the day when they made the announcement at school that President Kennedy had been assassinated. That's one of those events where you'll never forget where you were and what you were doing...
