Description
_____The Kerala backwaters are a chain of large and small interconnected lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast (known as the Malabar Coast) of Kerala state in southern India. The houseboats were traditionally used as grain barges, to transport the rice harvested in the fertile fields alongside the backwaters. Converted to accommodate tourists, the houseboats have become floating and navigating cottages having a sleeping area, with a dining area and a sit out on the deck.
I had the opportunity to visit the Backwaters onboard such a houseboat on my last visit to the south of India, and enjoyed the quietness and beauty of the place while being able to observe the daily life of the farmers and fishermen living along those waterways flanked by palm-trees, coconut-trees and tropical lush vegetation.
