Description

Tanacetum vulgare Here is some interesting information from the Readers Digest Guide to Wild Flowers of Britain, "In an age with a less sensitive palate than the present, Tansy brought together two arts:gardening and omelette making ! The plant's dark green leaves are strongly aromatic and were popular as a flavouring, particularly for egg dishes. It was also regarded as a fine alternative to very expensive imported spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon. Tansy's spicy savour is too overwhelming for modern tastes; indeed it's scent is so strong that even at the time it was in use as a flavouring it was also used as a repellent to keep mice from corn and flies from meat. In the 17th century the herbalist Nicholas Culpeper recommended it as a preventer of miscarriages, a mouthwash, an eye-lotion and a cosmetic among many other things. The name Tanacetum and the common name Tansy are both derived from the Greek for immortality, as in addition to its other virtues the plant was believed to confer eternal life on those who drank an infusion of it." Pretty and close packed blossoms. They make a great landing pad for the insects. Despite the proximity to the leaves it doesn't seem to have affected these little guys. I count seven of them.
