Description

Hello Rendosians ! It was a long time since my last upload but I didn't forget my rendosians friends : I was on vacation in a wonderful country, Greece :-) As you can guess I was impatient to visit this country known for its history, its culture, its gastronomy and I wasn't disappointed ! It was an eleven days travel through Greece and I had a great time. We landed in Athens and my first encounter with the hellenic state capital happened during a cloudy evening. I perceived the Acropolis far away from a street. The day after, our guide (named Eugenia) took us to the Acropolis and I had the chance to see the Parthenon. The weather was partly cloudy and rainy and the temple had huge scaffolding . Fortunately, one side was visible... Nevertheless it was an impressive experience to see the Parthenon and visit the Acropolis. After our visit the clouds were gone and the weather became very hot. Now, some facts about the Parthenon ( Ὁ Παρθενών) . The name means "virgin" because it is dedicated to Athena who was a virgin goddess. The temple is 69,5 m long and 31 m large. It contained a huge statue of Athena made of ivory and gold. It is also supposed to be a place to keep the treasure of Athens. During the history, it was converted into a church then into a mosque during the byzantine period. After that in became a powder magazine. The building was in a very good shape until the 17th century : the Venetians attacked Athens and they bombarded the Parthenon where the Athenians kept their powder. The building exploded. In 1801-1802, Lord Elgin, the english ambassador, took the Parthenon friezes and sent them to London where they still are nowadays, in the British Museum. I hope you'll like this capture ! ****************** Thanks for your comments and support ! Hugs Virginie

Beautifully captured Virginie. I like your brief history of the temple, very informative. I too liked Greece when I went there in 2013. Unfortunately I didn't make it to Corfu.
