Description

The Christchurch Cathedral was begun in 1864 and after many delays was completely in 1904. It is 61 m (~200-ft) long, 21 m (~69-ft) wide, and the combined height of the tower/spire is 63 m (~206-ft). It is built mostly of stone It was damaged by earthquakes in 1881, 1888, 1901 and 1922. On 4 September 2010 the 7.1 magnitude Canterbury earthquake and its aftershocks badly affected Christchurch's central city and eastern suburbs and weakened many buildings, including the cathedral. On 22 February 2011 at 12:51 PM local time, an earthquake occurred near the port town of Lyttelton, 6 miles south east of the center of Christchurch, that registered 6.3 on the Richter scale. The earthquake could be felt in parts of the North island. Prior to this earthquake, the fifth-deadliest natural disaster in New Zealand, Christchurch was the 2nd most populous city in the country. it has now slipped to the third spot. Many buildings in the city, and the cathedral, had been damaged by the 7.1 earthquake the previous September, and the 22 February quake that killed 185 people, toppled many buildings because of more than 400,000 tons of liquefaction (silt), including some flooding destabilizing the ground. The liquefaction bubbled up through road surfaces and weakened bridges, making rescue efforts more difficult. Many buildings received damage so severe that they had to be demolished, including the 26-story Hotel Grand Chancellor, Christchurch's tallest hotel, the 21-story Pricewaterhousecooper Building, the city's tallest office building, and the Carlton Hotel, a listed Heritage building. Damage occurred to many older buildings, particularly those with un-reinforced masonry. Of 3,000 buildings inspected within the four avenues of the central city by 3 March 2011, 45% were deemed unsafe to be occupied and had to be demolished. Similar damage was found in the suburbs and surrounding areas. The two earthquakes that did the damage to Christchurch occurred on previously unknown fault lines. It is estimated that to restore the city to its former condition will cost $40 Billion NZ (about $29 Billion US). As to the cathedral, whether to demolish it, built an entirely new one, or restore the current cathedral to it former glory rests with the Courts. This picture was taken on 11 June 2017, Sig... . .

Rebuild, if possible. Beautiful neo-gothic architecture. Sad that this had to happen. And New Zealand, of all places. Hopes for a good recovery! :-)

it was a terrible disaster and I felt sorry for those lost and injured. Irving, next to Dallas on the NE side has had several earthquakes but did nothing in Dallas proper

What a disaster. It sure was impressive to see the damages caused by this earthquake. Nature will always be stronger than humankind !

Hopefully the cathedral can be repaired and modernized to "quake-proof" standards. Good history!
