Description

Fifth in a series of airbrush art, this version done in grayscale, I used while seeking a technical illustrator/graphics artist job/jobs way back in the 20th century. This, along with several others, was done in the early 1950s, applied on art board, using a real airbrush with thin paints, attached to either a compressed air tank or to a motorized air compressor. I doubt if many of you were around back then to participate in or witness this art genre. The above was executed not only with an airbrush alone, but also using pen and ink, plastic templates and masks. A steady hand and a delicate touch is the name of the game. Mankind does not live by computer alone.

Now this is complex. Your first few airbrush uploads were probably more complex (lots of thin threads, close forms, etc), but this one has several highly varied surfaces and shapes all piled together, and it looks like it would take great presence of mind to get them all correct, yet still make this feel "whole". It does. It does look like a cutaway, a cross-section. And you handle the different sheens, shadows and surfaces expertly. This one has more gray in it, and it makes the thing feel like a formidable coagulation---almost like its alive. I wonder what it's like airbrushing so many different surfaces, careful not to let the spray on one surface 'migrate' to another. It looks like it takes a great deal of effort. A beautiful abstract, and endlessly fascinating. More meticulous work in this series.
