Description
Stortorget, Malmö, January 11, 2005
Stortorget = The Big Square/Plazza.
Looking to the right of the old city hall there is a yellow nondescript building housing offices and (of all things!) a Burger King! Beyond it we see this. The left building houses a drug store “The Lion” (Apoteket Lejonet) on the ground floor. This is Malmö’s oldest drug store, founded 1571 (then named Dietrichska Apoteket, after the founding druggist). It was moved to this location at the end of the 1800s, when this new renaissance building was completed under John Tesch’s (the proprietor/druggist) directions. The interior is all polished oak in gothic style. I’ve been in there, and MY, is it a beauty!
The other storys house offices and apartments (expensive ones!).
The building to the right was Skanska Banken’s building. The bank has been bought up by Sweden’s largest commercial bank – Handelsbanken. Notice the electric candles in the windows, a typically Swedish tradition around Christmas – New Years.
The architecture is a simplified Flemish style from the 1800’s, whereas the old city hall is full Flemish new renaissance.
The yellow truck is the Swedish postal system's delivery truck (mail, packages, etc.). The etc. does NOT include medications - those are sent by other means, for safety's sake.
Enjoy! But don’t get drugged out!
