Description

This picture was taken from the bridge of the Rainbow Valley Road across Waterman Wash, Waterman Wash originates south of Mobile and runs through Rainbow Valley in a northwesterly direction and merges with the Gila River near Buckeye. The previous night and early morning the West Valley (of the Greater Phoenix area) was hit with heavy rain and thunderstorms, part of our Monsoon. Most of the communities in the western part of the Valley of the Sun received amounts of up to, and sometimes exceeding 2 inches of rain. Rain gauges scattered throughout the county send rainfall amounts remotely to the offices of the Maricopa County Flood Control District, and based on the data, flood warnings are broadcast over the radio and TV. The gauges are usually at strategic location, easily accessible for maintenance. There are no gauges on top of the surrounding mountains, but it can be assumed that these mountains often receive much more than the recorded values if for no other reason than the thunderstorms often begin there first and often linger on. There happened to be a rain gauge and a flow rate meter at the bridge, and one of the people watching this flooding was from the Flood Control District. According to the data recorded there this spot received a little over 1/2 inch of rain and the Wash was running at at 680 CFS (Cubic feet Second). The runoff in the wash from the surrounding mountains was so big that Waterman Wash went over its channel and formed a second channel and took out some agricultural land. There is loss of life anyway. At night these flooded areas are hard to see and most roads outside the city limits are not lit!

I've never been there during monsoon, but I've seen dry washes aplenty. It always amazes me how much water can get flowing there in so short a time!
