Description

This is a non-venomous species of Water Snake. The Diamondback water snake as well as the other common species in my pond can grow up to 5' in length although they seldom do. My pond has a few of these as well as other non-venomous species such as the Yellow-bellied and Broad-banded Water Snakes. It is not infested with any of them but there are always a few of each. I suspect that Large Black Crappie, Raccoons, and large water birds (such as Little Blue Herons, Little Green Herons, and Great Blue Herons) keep then in check. These Snakes do spend the majority of the time in the water catching frogs, crayfish, and small fish; but they also hunt on dry land for mice, shrews, and other small mammals. My thanks to those who have taken the time to comment. The feedback is appreciated. Lee
